Here, we salute our Local Legends and shine a light on those working hard to make a difference to their community.
In this issue, we celebrate the
achievement of the recent formation
of the Marondera ZNSPCA (Zimbabwe
National Society for the Prevention of
Cruelty to Animals).
The SPCA is known far and wide for its
mandate and mission of protecting the
welfare of all animals. The Marondera
ZNSPCA branch may be a microcosm of that broader organisation, but locally, it is making an impact for the better of all the animals in the community.
Phyllis van Reenen shares how
determination, energy, compassion
and effort from local businesses and
community members, have gone
into creating this institution, coming
together to make a difference when
most needed. She makes it clear that
this is a story of strength and hope.
This is what makes the ZNSPCA
Marondera committee who give freely
of their time, and – also not forgetting
– the residents of Marondera for
supporting this cause, the Local
Legends of our inaugural Dera Digest
issue.
Whilst it is heartbreaking to
acknowledge that the existence of such a service is necessary, there is much to be celebrated when it comes to sharing details of this particular story. When an institution relies on donors and funding from the public, work is undertaken knowing that money and resources are not always guaranteed, and that day to day expenses require a constant stream of income to support them.
From dedicated individuals offering
their time freely, to skilled professionals offering their expertise in veterinary care and now, the full-time employment of an inspector, to ensure no animal is left behind, the Marondera ZNSPCA is in the best hands possible.
ZNSPCA inspector Mike Havenga is an
integral part of the team and the face
of ZNSCPA Marondera. He carries out
his mandate of animal welfare knowing
he has the backing and goodwill of an
amazing community.
Raising money is hard work, but it can
be fun and innovative. Also, what better
way to pull together a community than
through such fun events? It is through
ongoing fundraising initiatives, that the
Marondera community have showcased their creativity and unity.
The Mar Bazaar has become a regular fixture on the calendar, each one drawing more people in with the shared purpose of supporting the Marondera ZNSPCA.
A report of the Golf Day Fundraiser
will feature in our next issue. Events
such as these not only generate much needed funds but also foster a sense of
belonging and camaraderie within the
community.
Additionally, awareness campaigns
spearheaded by the committee have
became a huge part of the catalyst for
change. The social media platforms
regularly share stories of the ZNSPCA’s
work. Thanks to digital media, the
community’s collective voice echoes far
and wide, reaching many, far beyond
the physical boundaries of Marondera.
A significant part of ZNSPCA efforts
are to bring attention to issues such as
uncontrolled cat and dog breeding and
to educate people about responsible pet ownership, animal welfare laws, and the importance of compassion towards all living beings. But since their formation, they have been operating from a private veterinarian’s premises.
This is all set to change. An exciting
recent development is without
doubt, the long-term lease of a plot
of miombo woodland. This will allow
for development and building of
a dedicated ZNSPCA centre, with
infrastructure including new pounds, a
quarantine area, offices and a cattery.
Today, Marondera ZNSPCA stands
as a shining example of what Local
Legends can achieve when they stand
together. It serves as a testament to the
collective power of unity, compassion,
and resilience. The formation of the
Marondera ZNSPCA is testament to the
people who continue to fight so hard for
the animals’ voices to be heard.
Marondera ZNSPCA’s newfound
lease on life is a reminder to us all
that together, we can overcome any
obstacle. It demonstrates that when a
community unites for a common cause,
no challenge is insurmountable.
Let their story inspire us to make a
difference in our own communities, to
uplift and protect those who cannot
speak for themselves. Through unity
and compassion, we have the power
to create a brighter future not just for
animals, but for everyone.
